Hi Little Journey's World readers! My name is Rebecca, and I am the owner of Freckles Crafts. I spend my days balancing life as a stay at home mom and entrepreneur! In my shop you will find a wide assortment of craft kits for kids that include EVERYTHING you need to complete a gift quality craft. I am so excited to be a guest here today sharing this simple tutorial for a sweet Valentine's Day picture frame that will be perfect craft to make with your kids! Enjoy!

This is a quick and easy craft that your kids will love to make. The hardest part will be keeping them from eating the craft supplies!

Directions:
1. Remove frame insert and set aside
2. Apply tacky glue to frame working in small sections. Don't be shy with the glue. It takes quite a bit to hold the hearts
3. Apply candy hearts to glue
4. Allow to dry completely
5. Insert a photo and replace the glass

Being a super Mom and shooting great photography all in one day.

Just found this wonderful photography business called Lazy C Photography. Her photography make you smile and the color and depth in her work are just amazing. She is a mother of three cute children, which keep her on her toes all the time.
I was able to ask her some questions on how she does it all with her business and the family.

Nichole:

1. Why and when did you start Lazy C. Photography?

I started shooting the summer of 2009 when my husband bought me a dslr for my birthday!! I've always loved photography and art! My husband then had me taking pictures at our rodeos we put on (Lane Frost Challenge), then people started asking to buy the prints and things just sort of snowballed from there!! So officially I have been in business 2 yrs.

2. How do you joggle being a mommy to three cute children and your business?

It took me awhile to figure this out but I realized I can't take on more than I can handle and that was a VERY BIG challenge for me because I have a hard time saying no! This year I have cut back my sessions from 6-7 per week to 1-2 per week and because I did that I am now booked out until september!

3. What kind of photography do you like shooting the best?

So I love photographing small children and I love family and senior sessions but my ABSOLUTE passion is for ranch and equine photography! I like shooting weddings but I don't like the post processing of weddings so I don't offer them :)

4. Do you travel some with your business? Or do you just stay in your studio?

I do travel for business! I grew up in Kamas ut which is 2 hours from where I live now so I'm there quite a bit! I have some clients in wyoming, idaho and colorado as well!

5. I see that you live on a ranch in Utah. What do you and the kids
like doing in that beautiful state?

That's one thing I love about utah is that you can have variety in the terrain and area by just traveling in a short amount of time! Old farm houses and barns and abandoned cars are my favorite types of locations! My family loves to go ride our horses any chance we get! mY husband and I rope and we are getting are 5 yr old little girl started this year!! I can't wait to just travel around with the kids and watching them rodeo!!

6. If I missed something, what else would you like to say about
yourself or your business?

I would love to become a top Ranch photographer, that is my goal!! I would love to just travel around to different ranches and "do my thing" :)

Need some Mommy & Daughter Bonding Time? With no TV, Cell phones, etc. just some good old fashion bonding time. Well, the owner of The Sugar & Spice Ranch has something just for you and her is what she had to say:

1. What is The Sugar & Spice Ranch Camp all about?

At The Sugar & Spice Ranch it's all about "Bonding Mothers & Daughters Through Horses". We invite moms and daughters to come and live the ranch life for a week. You each are assigned your very own horses for the time you are with us and you learn what it's like to own a horse. Through this process you will discover many things about each other and I help along the way to make some connections for the moms & daughters through my horses. It's a psychological process and most of the time you don't even realize you are going through it. I can watch a mom and her horse or a daughter and her horse and tell you what kind of a relationship the mom and daughter have. My horses tell me quite a bit.

2. Where do you offer this?

We have been offering this program here in TEXAS for the last 7 years yikes, this is our 8th season coming up and now we will be offering a new program in Wyoming. The Wyoming packages will be a little different and will be offered to everyone not just moms and daughters. The Texas program is more of an educational program and we offer riding lessons and arena work with some trail riding thrown in. In Wyoming it is all about "hitting the trails" I will still be instructing on horse back with my partner, Rock Star but, it will be riding the wide open spaces and truly being out in the wild blue!!! You will experience another kind of magic at the new facilities!!!

3 Do you offer also this to families that have boys?

We offer family packages throughout the school year in Texas to anyone that would like to experience what we do. We also offer women only packages and corporate retreats for team building. Believe it or not we have even done guys only weekends....lots of fun!! Literally anyone that wants to come and own our ranch and experience what it's like to own a horse ranch can join us. In Wyoming, we offer the packages to all during the summer.

4. What made you start The Sugar & Spice Ranch?

I'm a mom myself of 2 amazing young ladies. My mom and I had an amazing relationship even though I lost her when I was only 12, my memories of her are so strong and so important to who I am today and is what a mom and daughter relationship should be based on. So, I wanted to create the same environment for my girls as well. I love horses, they're my life....so are my daughters...bring the two loves together and this is what you get......Magic!!!

5. What kind of testimonials & satisfaction do you and your customers get out of this camp?

My customers walk away with a true sense of accomplishment and a new found respect for one and other. When a mom watches her daughter control a horse at a canter for the first time it is breath taking. I can't tell you how many times I have sat on Rock Star next to a mom and heard her with tears in her eyes say, "Leigh, she's doing it, she's doing it"...chokes me up just thinking about it.... And, watching a mom work with a 1200 pound animal for the first time and be gentle but, firm to show who's in charge...kids seeing their moms taking control like that, now that's powerful stuff....Lord there are soooooo many things that go on here that it touches your heart in ways that you just have to experience.

6. Is there something else you would like to add that is important
about you and The Sugar & Spice Ranch?

We are a family run business...more often than not my daughters and I will be at the forefront of the staff you deal with. We are extremely hands on and although we have other staff we are always present and available to you for anything you need or want to discuss. We only take up to 8 guests at a time at the Texas ranch and only 10 guests at the Wyoming location. I never want to out grow what makes us so special....the personal touches that you will experience here will bring you back again and again. We consider all our guests family and want to welcome you back that way every time!!!

New Year’s Day Traditions by Leah owner of Peacock Pottery

This is what she had to say:

I grew up in a family that loves sports, so the tradition in our house on New Year’s Day is to watch college football and graze on snacks throughout the day.
Here are a couple of quick and easy dips:

Pizza Dip
1 package cream cheese
1 container of French Onion Chip Dip
2 T Taco Seasoning (adjust to taste)
Cream together and spread on a dinner size plate. Top with diced tomatoes, shredded lettuce, shredded cheddar cheese, sliced black olives. Serve with crackers or tortilla chips.

Crab Cheese Dip
1 package cream cheese
1 bottle cocktail sauce
1 Can of Crab Meat
1 bunch green onions
½ C shredded Swiss cheese
Spread softened cream cheese on a dinner size plate, cover with cocktail sauce, and then the crab meat. Slice the green onions, tops included sprinkle on top of crab meat. Add a little bit of cheese to top. Serve with crackers

New Year's Eve Tradition

From Mommy Perks

It's funny what we remember from childhood, right? It's likely that my mom only made this soup a few times but this is what stuck in my mind, nonetheless: Her meatball / corn soup. I remember mom making this for New Year's Eve dinner and then we'd all play games, into the evening. My folks don't drink and no one in our home felt the need to get hammered on New Year's Eve so. we simply spent a nice evening together as a family with our
soup, some sweets and some treats.

My mom would roll hamburger meat into small balls and drop those into boiling water. The meat would cook quickly inside the boiling water. She would add:

1. 2 cans of creamed corn
2. Cilantro
3. Broth

It's so simple and it tastes wonderful (so long as you're not a vegetarian, that is). We would eat dinner, get out the snacks and then play board games like Monopoly, Yahzee, etc. I try to keep this tradition going now and for the last few years, our family has enjoyed the soup, a night of games and a few candy/toy poppers from the store.

Non-alcohol holiday drink for kids: Apricot Fizz

Serve in special tall plastic champagne glass or a martini glass.

Scale ingredients to servings

3 cupsunsweetened apricot juice
3 cupsdiet or the original ginger ale
1 tbsp lemon juice

Chill apricot juice and ginger ale. To serve, combine apricot juice, ginger ale, and lemon juice; stir well, and pour into individual glasses.

Celebrate the New Year with your children and make Confetti Tubes

Materials Need: Hole Puncher
Toilet Paper Tubes
Paper: different colors
Stickers, Jewels, wrapping paper, tissue paper (Anything you would like to decorate your tube with)
Ribbon: to tie of the ends with

Close one end of the tube with tape, start punching holes in paper and place it in the tube, until full. Then wrap (roll) it in wrapping paper and then place a ribbon on each side to close it. Then start decorating your tube with whatever you desire.

Let your kids have a ball by throwing the confetti either before (for those who can't stay up so late) or at 12.00 midnight. Yes, it's a mess. But oooooh so much fun.

Peppermint Clouds

1 C butter - softened
1/2 C Powdered Sugar
1/2 t Peppermint Extract
1 1/4 C Flour
1/2 C Cornstarch

Frosting:

2 T Butter - softened
1/1/2 C Powdered Sugar
2 T Milk (I use skim)
1/4 t Peppermint Extract
1/2 C Crushed Peppermint Candies

Preheat oven to 350*. In a mixing bowl cream butter & powdered sugar until fluffy. Add peppermint, slowly add flour and cornstarch, mix well. Shape into balls and place on a baking sheet. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes, until the bottoms are lightly browned. Let cool. Gather the frosting ingredients, in a mixing bowl beat the butter and powdered sugar until fluffy. Add the milk & peppermint, mix well. Spread over the cooled cookies and sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies.

These are so pretty for the holidays. Enjoy.

What a fun and easy to use product!

The projects you can create are endless: making stickers for your Holiday Jam, Stickers for Christmas Cookie Bags that you make for your kids classmates, etc.

Here is a sample of my Christmas Tags I made. Just printed out some Christmas designs on the stickers and then placed them on colored hardstock for that extra frame effect and then use ribbon to finish it off.

The very fact that you can buy these stickers at Hobby Lobby, online, etc is very convenient. You can get all kinds: Round/Oval ones for Christmas tags, Square ones for events and family reunions, etc. There is no software needed and I felt like anybody could create their sticker with little or no knowledge at all.

Cinnamon Apple Popcorn

Cinnamon Apple Popcorn

2 Cups Chopped Dried Apples
10 Cups Popped Popcorn
2 cups Pecan Halves
4 Tablespoons Butter - melted
1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
1/4 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Place Apples in a large shallow baking pan. Bake 20 minutes. Remove pan from oven and stir in popcorn and nuts. In a small bowl combine remaining ingredients. Drizzle butter mixture over popcorn mixture, stirring well. Bake for 30 min, stirring every 10 min. Pour onto waxed paper to cool. Store in airtight container. Makes 14 Cups mix.

Soap Crayons for Kid's Bath for the Holidays (Would make great gifts for your kids classmates)

(Microwable Molds can be found anywhere, this is a gingerbread mold that I found on amazon

Soap Crayons for Kid's Bath

1 cup soap flakes
1/4 cup boiling water
Food Coloring
Microwable Mold

Drop the water into the flakes, one teaspoon at a time, stirring constantly. It will be thick and hard to stir Spoon of the soap into different bowls and color each with the food coloring until it has the consistency of thick paste. Press spoonfuls into the mold and microwave on low for 15 minutes to dry the crayon soap out. Let them dry at room temperature for several days and give it another day after un-molding. The kids will love these!

If you don't want the color in them, just leave it away and maybe at some natural fragrance oil and just give as a special holiday soap gift.

(Once you have used the mold for these soap, do not use for anything else besides making soap. We want your children to be safe)

This recipe can all be used by an Adult. We don't want anything happening to your little ones.

Do you know WHY your child begs for toys or snacks or What to do (not related 2Meals)

We all have different skills, talents and things we notice. One of my talents happens to be noticing the connection between a child's actions and the feelings underneath it. It’s something I can see very clearly as if I was watching a movie. However, seeing if a word is misspelled or a misuse of grammar, that I can't see for the life of me. Here are just a few examples of what I notice as far as your children’s begging for food, snacks, and/or toys not related to meal times.

Timing: At the end of a play-date without fail most kids ask for a snack, say "I am hungry", or ask for something like computer time, T.V or a toy.
Reason: Hard for kids to transition and feel sad to stop playing. Response: You can say that "it's hard to say goodbye", "we can play again", "we can have a snack in a few minutes." (if they strat talking about feelings they tend to forget snacks.
Action: Try to add “Its hard to say goodbye” as you give 5-minute warning time is up.

Timing: When they get picked up from school or the minute they see you after work they say can I have a snack, computer, TV, or toy?
Reasons: They waited all day to see you, long day sitting still holding it together, a teacher or friend was mean, excited about something that they want to share with you.
Response Say: "Sure in a few minutes, tell me about your day ﬁrst." "Tell me 2 things, What did you like? What didn't you like? Did something funny happen or exciting? Did something hurt your feelings?" Get them talking before eating.
Action: Break the Food Mood Connection.Walk and Talk before snack. Carry healthy snacks and water with you always.

Timing:Right before bed or before parents go out at night. Reasons: Hard to leave you for the night, may not have felt they had enough time alone with you, something hurt them that they haven't been able to talk about.
Response: Say, "I think our feelings are hungry not our tummies, we had a full day of food today lets talk for a few minutes. I know its hard to say goodnight. We had such a fun day or we didn't get to spend enough time together."
Action Hug,talk cuddle,listen to feelings,show empathy Timing: Whenever you say "NO" to your child. Not that you shouldn't say no but its the way its said.
Reason: Hard for kids or anyone to hear the word "no" because it hurts our feelings, makes people feel unloved and unimportant and that your needs don't matter.
Response "I am sorry to disappoint you, but we can't right now" or "We can do it tomorrow. I know its hard to wait but let's try and wait together."
Action Try not using the word no for a week. Finding another way to say it can be quite challenging. It took me a month to ﬁnd new ways to say thing in a positive fashion.

In my various projects, “My Feelings Are Hungry” and “Listen To Me Please,” I address what I call the The Power of Feelings — the missing link in the overeating misbehaving epidemic. The songs and The Feeling Town Map at the back of the book, “My Feelings Are Hungry” teaches parents and children how to be detectives, reinforcing the principles and techniques introduced in the book.

A lifelong education in these skills should start early, ideally as part of the pre-school and elementary curricula alongside math, science, art and music. Again, I believe if we add a feelings component to the existing campaigns that address childhood issues, we will achieve success and make a lasting impact on this and future generations.

Our goals is to give family’s the language to talk about how they feel instead of overeating, screaming, or begging for things. Instead of arguing or controlling food, the idea is to ask:
• “What are you feeling” I noticed you are asking for a lot of things.?
• When they answer “Nothing,“ or “I don’t know,“ which they will accept that as the truth . Children need to be given choices of possible feelings to help learn to identify them.
• In addition to using the Feeling Town Map daily (at Back Of Book My Feelings Are Hungry) , Here are several great conversation-starters — many more can be found in my books “My Feelings Are Hungry” and “Listen To Me, Please!”:
• “Has something or someone hurt your feelings?”
• “Did you feel like we need to spend some time alone?”
• “Were you missing someone?” • “Were you angry or disappointed about something?” Give possible choices from your kid’s life.
• “Did something fun or exciting happen?” Don’t just focus on the negative.
• The whole process of undoing the begging-asking-food-mood connection takes a while. The most important thing is to talk about and listen to hurt feelings, and then help engage kids in problem-solving. Empathy is what helps feed children's hungry feelings, so they could move forward and enjoy the day.

My son, the dog, and I decided to do a Tea Party!

We invited Ladybug, Snakey, Angry Birds, Lucky the Tiger. We had black cherry tea with some cinnamon cookies. YUM!

Sometimes a Mom just needs to drop everything and play. It doesn't matter if your hair is out of place, or no make-up on at all.

All that matters is my little man and I were having fun. And boy did we have fun.

Ingredients:
1/2 cup blanched almonds
16 oz. unsalted butter, softened
3 tbsp. confectioners' sugar
2 egg yolks
3 tbsp. cognac, or other brandy
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3 cups cake flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
Whole cloves (optional)
Confectioners' sugar (about 1 pound), for sifting over tops

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 C).

Spread almonds in single layer on baking sheet.

Bake, stirring occasionally, until lightly toasted, about 10 minutes. Remove from oven; cool, and chop coarsely.

Beat softened butter in large bowl of electric mixer on medium-high speed until very light and fluffy, 5 minutes. Add the 3 tablespoons of confectioners' sugar; continue beating 3 minutes. Add egg yolks, cognac and vanilla; beat until smooth. Mix in almonds, flour and baking powder until mixed well (if dough is too soft to handle, add additional flour). Shape tablespoons of dough between your palms and roll into round balls or oval shaped or crescent shaped cookies. Place (push down slightly) one whole clove on top of each cookie, (optional).

Bake on ungreased baking sheets until set and very pale golden in color, about 15 minutes. The shortbread cookies should not be too brown, a very light color, almost no color. Remove cookies to cooling rack. Place remaining confectioners" sugar into sifter, and while cookies are still hot, sift confectioners" sugar over tops.

When cookies are completely cool, roll cookies in confectioners' sugar, and then repeat this rolling in sugar one more time. Place each cookie in a pretty paper muffin cup for serving.

Makes: 4 dozen cookies.

Jam Thumbprints from the Barefoot Contessa

Ingredients
3/4 pound (3 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash
7 ounces sweetened flaked coconut
Raspberry and/or apricot jam

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

In an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream together the butter and sugar until they are just combined and then add the vanilla. Separately, sift together the flour and salt. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture to the creamed butter and sugar. Mix until the dough starts to come together. Dump on a floured board and roll together into a flat disk. Wrap in plastic and chill for 30 minutes.

Roll the dough into 1 1/4-inch balls. (If you have a scale they should each weigh 1 ounce.) Dip each ball into the egg wash and then roll it in coconut. Place the balls on an ungreased cookie sheet and press a light indentation into the top of each with your finger. Drop 1/4 teaspoon of jam into each indentation. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the coconut is a golden brown. Cool and serve.

And love to have it with Strawberry Scones, which I got this special recipe from Irene owner of Blogpot: Confessions of a Tart

Strawberry Scones
(makes 6 large scones or 12 minis)

1 cup strawberries (or other fruit)
3 tablespoons sugar (granulated)
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter, in cubes, slightly softened
2/3 cup half-and-half or cream or cold buttermilk

Topping:
1 tablespoon sugar

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a cookie sheet.

If using larger fruit, cut into bite-sized pieces. Sprinkle fruit with 1/2 tablespoon sugar; set aside. Be sure to make the pieces small, or they tend to fall out of the dough. They'll still be plenty prominent in your finished scones.

Combine remaining sugar with flour, baking powder and salt. Add butter, using a pastry cutter or 2 knives to cut in butter (you may want to use your fingers to be sure butter is evenly mixed into flour). Stir in fruit; then add cream/half-and-half/buttermilk all at once. Use spatula to gently stir dough until it holds together.

Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead a few times to incorporate dry ingredients. Be gentle so you don't break up the berries and don't overwork the dough. Sprinkle dough with flour if it gets sticky.

Press (pat) the dough into a circle 3/4 inch thick. If any berries peek out, push them into dough. Cut circle into 6-8 wedges, then transfer wedges to the cookie sheet, leaving at least 1/2 inch of space between them. Bake 15 minutes.

Sprinkle with sugar and bake 5-10 more minutes or until the tops are beginning to brown and spring back when you push them (this took another 15-20 minutes in my oven, but keep a careful watch and check every 5 minutes - you do not want dry scones!). (The sprinkling of sugar over the top for the last few minutes of baking creates a simple, sparkly topping.)

Campfire Cinnamon Coffeecake

2 T Butter or Margarine
1 c Packaged biscuit mix
1/3 c Evaporated milk, undiluted
1 T Prepared cinnamon-sugar

Make Coffeecake: Cut butter into tiny pieces over biscuit mix in medium bowl. Toss lightly withfork until butter is coated. Make a well center. Pour in milk and cinnamon-sugar, stirring with fork just until mixture is moistened. Turn dough into a lightly greased and floured 8 inch shiny, heavy skillet. With floured hands, pad down evenly into the skillet. Cook, covered, over very low heart. 12 to 15 minutes, or until a cake tester or wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

For Topping: Spread the coffeecake with 2Ts butter or margarine. Then sprinkle 1ts prepared cinnamon-sugar over all of it. Cut into quarters, and serve warm.

Picky eaters can drive parents crazy. I know one baby raised solely on creamed spinach (imagine those diapers) and a little girl who refuses to eat brown food. One Texan friend could only get her son to eat corny dogs; another served pasta with butter nightly for nearly six years.

These are kids who are very selective or fussy with food, not those with allergies or digestive issues, and they can make eating out as a family a nightmare.

Although we learn how to get even the fussiest children eating healthy meals at home, it can be an overwhelming challenge on vacation.

Why Resorts can Make Vacations & Life Easier

At America's beach and ski resorts, on cruise ships and in themeparks, the Kids Buffet -- a colorful display of kid-pleasing, hated-by-parents foods like chicken bits, french fries, sausages, spaghetti, ice cream -- comes in handy with picky eaters.

Fortunately, moms' obsession with healthy eating has prompted companies like Club Med and Disney to offer kids meals with more healthy choices, fruits and vegetables.

But in my experience, even their playful approach to making nutritious foods appealing rarely includes a dish that could be considered "exotic" or flavored with interesting foreign spices. To promote healthy eating on vacation and make new foods less scary, bring them into the house with these recipes for picky eaters.

Bring Foreign Cultures into Your Home Before You Hit the Road

Traveling overseas with kids -- even those who aren't fussy about eating -- is a challenge I love.

But, to make it fun, you'll have to broaden the family's world view before departure by introducing foreign films, music, arts and foods in the comfort of your home. Share photos, brochures and stories about your upcoming vacation.

Everyone loves movies, so rent a Netflix, cartoon or "Sesame Street" episode filmed in your destination. Check iTunes for world music. The local library is a great resource for children's books; you may find a "Boxcar Children" mystery (more than a hundred of these fun family mysteries were written by Gertrude Chandler Warner) set in your destination.

As for delicious new foods, introduce them at meal time before you pack your first suitcase, and everyone in the family will get excited about the wonderful new flavors and textures ahead.

Kids May Have a Multi-Cultural Palate

Chances are that if you're traveling in Europe, the Middle East, Caribbean or a South American country, your children may already be eating some 'foreign' foods, or at least an adaptation of them. Point out to the kids how fish 'n' chips, croissants, pasta, pita with hummus, tropical fruits, meat patties, beans and rice are already on the menu. If they're not, visit the frozen foods aisle in your market and take home some of these tasty, kid-friendly international foods. Serve small portions and serve them often.

More fun, though, is to try to cook some international dishes that transcend cultures and are universally appealing to children. Over the years I’ve become less and less inclined to shower my children with gifts on holidays. I now pick and choose my gifts with care, keeping in mind that my goal is to show them they are loved…but not spoiled.

This year, for Easter, I decided to give each child a little basket. Inside the baskets were hand-made Easter bags from Little Journey’s World

My younger kids have been carrying their Little Journey’s World Easter bags around for two days now – putting their eggs, candy and toys inside. They think the bags are so wonderful and really – they are. Caroline made them with her own hands and I think my kids just know…they are special.

7 Keys to Selecting the Ideal Book for a Child

You might have heard that getting kids to read is a good thing. You are charged up to introduce the kids in your life to some good children's books. Here are seven things to consider when selecting a children's book, that way you get a book that your child relishes and picks up time and time again.

1. Age

The age of your child will help you determine the book format to pick. Think cloth or rag books for babies. They put everything in their mouth. You want to get a book you can throw in the washing machine when soiled. Bath books are also a good option as they are waterproof and will survive many messy spills and make bath time lots of fun. Board books are best for toddlers. Kids in this age group are very active and may I replace the word destructive with curious. Paperback books will be ripped apart. Don't be upset if your child tears apart a book, it's all part of the learning process.

2. Gender

Boys and girls are very different in how they learn and read. For most parts, language development comes earlier in girls. You might find a girl reading better than a boy initially. This often leads to boys being mislabeled as "reluctant readers"

3. Personality

Is your child a social butterfly, pick a light-hearted book. If you have an introverted kid, a mystery or adventure plot might be a better pick.

4. Hobbies

This is by far the best way to get a child interested in reading. Look to get a title on what piques their interest. If a boy loves trains or truck, get him a book on truck or trains. If your girl loves playing the princess part, get her a book with a princess theme.

5. Current Events in a Child's Life

Think milestones like graduation or puberty. Loss of a loved one or a beloved pet, adjusting to various life changes are various examples of what could cause stress for a child. A book on the relevant topic could bring solace.

6. Current World Events and Holidays

These events are teachable moments for a child. You may select books to open up discussion on ancestry or holidays.

7. Important Concepts

Are you working on potty training? Are you trying to instill manners? You can get them a book written in the language a child can easily grasp.

Easter Ham with the works

EASTER HAM
9 lb Spiral Cut Ham
1 can Sprite or 7up
Put Sprite over the ham. Then put tin foil over and sit for 30 minutes.
Glaze:
Brown Sugar
Yellow Mustard or Dijon
Mix as Paste and Brush on Ham
Decorate Ham with whole cloves and cherries and well as pineapple rings
Cook at 325 Degrees for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours

GREEN BEAN CASEROLE
1 frozen Petite green Beans
1 can cream of mushroom soup
2 green onion chopped fine
1 pkg onion rings
1/4 cup butter
Melt Butter - Mix with soup and onion. Pour over green bean heat for 1/2 hour at 325
degrees. Lay onion rings on top of green beans heat for 15-20 minutes at 375 degrees
until golden brown.

SCALOP POTATOES
4-6 Potatoes (brown) sliced very thin
2 cups Heavy cream
1 Stick Butter
Garlic Powder
Onion Powder
(Croutons or chips)
Spray bottom of pan with pam or butter it
Layout potatoes flat or side ways
Whip the heavy cream
Add melted butter to cream
Add garlic + onion powder and salt and pepper. Pour over potatoes
Bake 35 - 45 minutes at 325 degrees. Crunch croutons or chips over potatoes put several
pads of butter on top of crunch layer. Put back in for 15 minutes until golden brown and
melted.

I have quite a few plates and crystal bowls from my Grandmothers and 1 bowl that is from a Great, Great, Great Grandmother – I think of that every time I use it!

Why I think Reliable Bloggers is a good thing for my business!

Being a small business owner, I don’t have much spare time on my hands. I am always busy doing PR, preparing for Shows, making products, accounting, being a mommy or wife…and the list goes on. I find that Reliable Bloggers will be just the right thing that will save me the TIME and the research to see if:

1. The blog is good fit for my business
2. The blogger is reliable/honest
3. The blog will bring me the PR I need
4. The blog may bring me new customers/orders
5. The blogger loves what I do and will support me and my business and get the results I need, because they believe in me.
6. The blogger brings something new to the table other than bringing me more followers to twitter and facebook.

My business has been burned too many times, where I have sent out product for a review and the review was never completed. I just hate following up! TIME is too precious to me. I expect the bloggers to be very professional and honest.

What I look for in a Blogger:

1. How long they have been doing it
2. Honesty
3. Writes good reviews and doesn't just copy and paste my bio
4. What kind of followers they have
5. Stats
6. They don't make the 1st suggestion on what they want to review or giveaway. They let me decide first, based on my inventory, budget and marketing needs.

(If somebody says they want the most expensive thing on my site to review and they mention, “It would be great for my child!” – That’s a big RED FLAG! This means, “I want something for FREE for the review, but I will not work hard for your business.”)

Of course I and other businesses can talk about this and add more points about this issue, but it would just take up too much TIME. And again, TIME is always an issue here.

So, I just wanted to say I am glad that Reliable Bloggers is here to support and watch out for my business. And save me TIME!

The Luck of the Irish Stew (got this from an Irish friend of Mine)

Ingredients:
Olive-oil
3 lbs Beef Stew
1 large Yellow Onion
1 bag Baby Carrots
6-8 Stalks Celery
4 large Potatoes
2 large containers of V8 Juice
1/2 –1 tsp thyme
1 clove Garlic
1 tsp basil
4 cubes beef bouillon (or 1 can of liquid beef bouillon)
Get a large cooking Pot. Put Beef Stew in a plastic bag with 3 tablespoons of flour in it
and shake. Heat up oil and onion in pot, then put the meat in until it has browned a little
bit. Add V8 Juice and Spices. Simmer for 6-8 hours till tender. (Add Veggies in pot 2
hours before serving) Serve with Garlic Bread or eat plain.

Blackberry Valentine Recipe

Wishing you all a Happy Valentines Day and we thank www.valentinerecipes.net (twitter name @Recipe_Tweet) for letting us share this recipe with you.

Ingredients:
1 x store-bought pound cake.
1 pint Blackberries.
2 tablespoons of sugar.
½ teaspoon of fresh lemon juice.
½ cup of chilled whipping cream.

Preparation Instructions:
1. Slice the pound cake into 4 slices approximately 1 inch thick. With a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out hearts from each slice of the cake.
2. In a bowl crush 1/2 of the Blackberries and the sugar. Add the remaining Blackberries whole to the bowl. Add the lemon juice and mix well.
3. Whip the cream until it is at the soft peak stage.
4. To Serve: Place 1 heart on a plate. Pour the Blackberry mixture over each cake. Cover the cake with another heart. Top with whipped cream and the remaining Blackberry mixture.

Apple Fritters (Apfelkucherl) German Recipe

Apfelkücherl,

(Somewhat healthy and yummy for the kiddos)

1 1/2 cups flour
salt
3 eggs
1 cup beer (recipes is safe for children, alcohol will evaporate while deep frying)
3-4 apples, peeled, cored and cut into slices, 1/2 inch thick
oil for deep frying
1/2 cup sugar mixed with cinnamon

Place the flour and salt in a mixing bowl. Add the eggs and you must slowly stir in the beer to make a thick batter.
Heat the oil in a large pan or use your deep fryer. Dip the apple slices in the batter and deep fry them until golden brown.
They are really test the best when they are warm and have been sprinkled with the cinnamon sugar. (mix sugar and cinnamon together)

You can also serve them with warm vanilla sauce. YUM. ENJOY!

The custom of sending Christmas cards originated in England, a nation rich in varied traditions. Window candles attract carolers, called waits, who fill the air with Christmas music. A yule log finds its place of tradition in the hearths of some homes in England and Wales. Children hang stockings by the chimney or their bed, hoping Father Christmas will bring them gifts. Before the use of the Christmas tree, the main decoration was the kissing bough, made of evergreens, holly, and ivy. Christmas feasting includes the wassail bowl and flaming plum pudding. On Boxing Day, December 26 (St. Stephen's Day), gift boxes and alms are distributed to the needy.

France

The crèche (manger) occupies a place of prominence in the French home. Terra cotta figures known as santons (little saints) represent the Holy Family. Area processions include a live lamb, the symbol of the Lamb of God. The Bûche de Noel, a log-shaped cake, has become a favorite Christmas delicacy. The first star in the Christmas Eve sky signals the end of a daylong fast of Wigilia, and celebrations begin. Before the Christmas Eve meal is served, the head of the house distributes an oplatki (peace wafer) symbolizing friendship and peace. A straw-strewn place setting is reserved for the humble Christ. Decorations include an elaborate creche and choinka (Christmas tree) decorated with straw stars, fruit, nuts, cookies, and intricately painted eggs. Often, young men carry a lighted star on a pole en route to Pasterka (Shepherd's Mass) at midnight Christmas Eve.

Spain
Feliz Navidad
The Spanish Christmas blends the religious spirit of the Nativity with delights of the table, the Spanish passion for song and dance, and the universal pleasure of renewing family ties. The nacimiento (birth), belenes (Bethlehem crib) or Nativity scene is more important to the family than a Christmas tree. Christmas Eve is known as Noche buena, the "good night." After mass and a special meal, the children receive one gift – other gifts must wait for Epiphany (12 days after Christmas), since the Three Kings are the legendary gift bearers. The Kings leave gifts in shoes the family has left out.

Sweden

Santa's Name - Santa Claus. Children leave him a piece of cake or biscuits and a glass of milk or a bottle of beer.
Food - Many Christmas dinners include roasted meats and vegetables, special fruit cakes, and puddings with a coin baked inside. Since the temperature can reach 100 degrees Fahrenheit, people are starting to eat cold meats and salads, tropical fruits like mangoes, and stone fruits like plums. Often, the main meal is eaten for lunch.
Gifts - These are left under the Christmas tree and opened Christmas morning.
Decorations - Shops and homes are decorated with tinsel, Christmas trees, decorations for the holiday, and special lights.
Customs - Traditional and Australian carols are sung by candlelight on Christmas Eve and are broadcast on television. On Boxing Day, the day after Christmas, two sporting events take place:

Brazil

Decorations - Brazil has a mixture of people so Christmas is celebrated in different ways. In the northeastern area, it is common to find Nativity Scenes; in the southern part, snow is simulated with little pieces of cotton on pine trees.
Customs - Brazilians sing a number of Christmas carols.

Greece

Greeting - Eftihismena Christougenna
Food - Special holiday cakes are baked.
Gifts - Most Greek people exchange gifts on Saint Basil's Day, January 1.
Customs - To honor Saint Basil, the holiday cakes have gold coins hidden inside them. The cakes are cut at midnight on New Year's Eve. Whoever has a gold coin in his piece of cake will have good luck the following year.

Hungary

Santa's Name - Actually, the Baby Jesus is said to bring presents on Christmas Eve. A bell sounds signaling that the Angels have brought the tree and gifts.
Customs - On December 5, children leave out their shoes. During the night, Mikulas and Black Peter come to fill them with goodies for well-behaved children and switches for naughty children.

India

Decorations - Sometimes, houses are decorated with mango leaves; mango or banana trees are also decorated. Small, clay, oil-burning lamps are placed on the edges of flat roofs as decorations.

Japan

Greeting - Kurisumasu Omedeto
Santa's Name - Santa Kurohsu. He does not appear in person but is pictured in advertisements as a kind old man with a round sack on his back.
Food - Depending upon the family's custom, they eat turkey on Christmas Day or on Christmas Eve. Japanese families also eat Christmas cake.
Gifts - Stores sell merchandise for men, women, and children; and on Christmas Day, families exchange gifts.
Decorations - More and more artificial Christmas trees are beginning to appear. They are decorated with small toys, gold paper fans, dolls, lanterns, paper ornaments, and wind chimes. A popular ornament is the origami swan. Other decorations are mistletoe, evergreen, tinsel, and lights. An amulet is put on the front door for good luck and children exchange 'birds of peace,' pledging there must not be anymore war.
Customs - The daiku, or Great Nine, refers to Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and is performed many places.

Mexico

Netherlands

Santa's Name - Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas), who wears a red bishop's hat and bishop's cloak and has white hair and a white beard. He arrives on a white horse with his servant, Black Pete, to put small gifts in children's wooden shoes.
Food - The Dutch people eat lots of marzipan, spiced ginger biscuits, tall chocolate letters, and 'bankletter' - initials made of pastry and filled with almond paste. When they are around the Christmas tree singing songs, they eat 'Kerstkrans' - a Christmas ring.
Gifts - On December 6, after hearing a knock at their door, children find a bag full of toys, nuts, and gifts.
Decorations - The Christmas tree is known as the Paradise Tree. Decorations of the season include dolls, musical instruments, fruit, candies, and lights.
Customs - The Dutch sing carols, the most popular one being "O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree."

Caroline sent me a Mini Bag to try out… and my daughter just loved it! She uses this cute bag everyday for both play and travel. She has turned this bag into a diaper bag for her favorite doll. When we are getting ready to go, she runs to her bag, empties whatever is in it, and packs what she needs for the trip – usually a small dog and her wallet

I love this bag for the wonderful quality and beautiful craftsmanship. It is incredibly well made, and I can see that my daughter is going to enjoy it for a long time to come! The material is so pretty, and matches most of my daughters clothes (she wears a ton of pink and brown!).

It is the perfect size for her, and I really like that there are no zippers, buttons or snaps. It makes it easy for her to fill and empty, and it is super soft. Plus, it is nice that I don’t have to worry about the baby getting his hands on it and possibly choking.

It's the Holiday Season bake with your Kids: Recipe Beg for More Crumble

It's baking season, and I just love it. Christmas Cookies, Cake, Fresh Bread, Cornbread and a whole lot more.

Here is a recipe you might like doing with your kids:

Beg For More Crumble (yes this is the actual name - got it from a "thanksgiving"
condensed milk advert years and years ago - still think it's the best i've ever
tasted - and it's oh so easy toooooooo!)

1 can (3 dl) Regular or Low Fat
Condensed Milk
1/4 cup (1/2 dl) orange juice
1/2 tsp each: ground cinnamon and nutmeg
whisk together Condensed Milk, orange juice & spices
3 apples, peeled, cored and sliced
3 pears, peeled, cored and sliced
1/2 cup frozen cranberries, thawed add apples, pears & cranberries, toss
until fruit is well coated spoon mixture into a lightly buttered 8 cup (2L)
baking dish set aside
Crumble
1 cup all purpose flour
1/2 cup each: rolled oats, brown sugar and butter
combine flour, oats & sugar
cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs
sprinkle on top of apple mixture
Bake in preheated 375Â°F (190Â°C) oven for 30-35
minutes or until fruit has softened.
Serve with ice cream (Serves 6)

We were sent a hairdresser cape which is just perfect for us since I cut the boys hair myself. It's short & I will just say it, very nappy, it gets all over them & it's hard to get off. Those little plastic capes just do not work. I love the workmanship and size of the cape. By the time this posts I will be at the airport waiting to board a plane with my 2 and 4 year old. This will be their first time on a plane, their first time leaving the state, their first time traveling further than 200 miles away from home.

I’m excited, nervous and a little bit scared. I don’t know how my kids are going to react. We will be on the plane for a LONG time and they have a hard time sitting still for a 90 minute movie.

So I’ve been trying to come up with some ways to occupy and distract them. See, my kids don’t know we are going to Disney World. As a matter of fact currently they have no idea that we are going anywhere. We are going to stay the night near the airport the night before and we plan on telling them we are going to visit their grandparents that night. It’s not lying. We really are going to see their grandparents while in Florida. We are just selectively leaving out the whole Mickey and Minnie Mouse thing.

Anyway, back to the plane ride. My friend Sarah had told me about a really great thing she and her husband did when they flew with 2 of their 4 kids for the first time. They were flying for the holidays so to make it special she wrapped up several small presents and stashed them in her bag for the plane. When the kids would start to get restless she would pull out a present for each of them and they would be good to go for a while.

So I’ve taken that idea . I’ve actually procured some super cute items that are Disney themed and some that are not. My plan is to give them to the kids throughout the flight. I’ve also got the portable DVD player packed with Disney movies of course and each of my kids will have a backpack that they can pack a few toys in to take on the plane and I’ll put some snacks and a drink in there too.

One of the items I have (although not Disney themed) is a super cute product from Little Journeys Baby World.Chalkboard Placemats. This is one of her So, I actually let the kids play with this one already. It is so cool to have when at a restaurant. The kids have fun drawing on the “chalkboard” side and then when their meal comes we flip it over and they have a special placemat.

I also like the fact that they roll up and have a ribbon tie and fit easily in my purse, which I will admit is a bit oversized, and are great to carry around to use not just for eating out but for doctors office or any other appointments where you need to occupy the kids.

The only drawback that I could find with them is that since they are stored rolled up, when you first untie and open them you really have to smooth them out to get them to lay flat. This is all me though because the kids don’t seem to mind that they have to hold one side down when trying to draw on them. And when you flip them over for the placemat they lay down fine.

I'm a southern girl , so it's no surprise that I'm a fan of cute country western home decor and attire! And though my daughter was born in Oregon, I hope she at least half heartily embraces her mom's southern heritage in one way or another.

A few weeks ago, I fell head over heels in love with the incredibly cute Western Line for children and babies I came across at Little Journeys Baby World. My Thoughts...

I was given the opportunity to review a custom made western onesie for my daughter from Little Journeys Baby World. As you can see from my included photos, the onesie is just too cute! The bandanna that is attached to her onesie just takes the cake! I like that I don't have to worry about putting an actual bandanna around my daughters neck for her to pull and tug at in which then end results could end in strangulation.

The onesie I was sent stands great alone but when paired with a blue jean skirt or overalls, it really compliments a fantastic western look. I wanted to let you know that if there is a design you don't see at Little Journeys Baby World, you can contact Caroline and she may be able to create a custom design just for you just like she did for my daughter Melody.

Boo Boo Bunnies- Stocking Stuffers (Festive R&G)

Have you noticed that you are always running around to look for a thick hand towel or cloth to hold ice in when your little one gets that sore bump that needs to be iced off? I know I'm always throwing stuff out of drawers to find a cloth that's just the right thickness to allow the ice cube to do its work and something that's easy for Bunny girl to hold while she ices off her 'boo boo'.

I’m pretty sure that by now, most (if not all) of readers are well aware that I’m a bit of a country girl. Little Journeys Baby World is too cute for words. And they aren’t geared only “country”. But other ethnicity’s as well. The lines that Little Journey’s has created are just adorable.

November is National Adoption Month and, as we well know, there are many ways to build a family. For some, the old-fashioned way is not possible or optimal. They may decide to pursue infertility treatment such as intra-uterine insemination (IUI) or in-vitro fertilitzation (IVF). Some may consider surrogacy or donor eggs/sperm. Others may desire to become a child's forever family via foster care, domestic adoption or international adoption.

While there is a wait involved no matter which road you choose, the adoption process can take up to three years or more. Many factors are out of your control, as you wait for your referral. When adopting internationally, political unrest or changes in adoption laws can further delay the process. During this agonizing wait, prospective parents often experience mixed emotions: excitement, fear, anxiety, disbelief, sadness. They may encounter setbacks and wonder if their dream will ever come true.

Chinese adoption programs tend to be the most reliable and stable, and therefore the number one choice for international adoptive parents in the U.S. since 2000. According to Adoption.com, in 2008, U.S. citizens adopted approximately 3,909 children from China. China's popularity is also due to the fact that the average age of its adoptees is considerably younger than other countries. AdoptionServices.org states that the average age of Chinese children at the time of their adoption is 8-15 months old. This allows the family to bond from an early age, and makes future attachment disorders unlikely. Chinese adoptees also tend to be in excellent health, which is appealing to many adoptive parents. The vast majority of Chinese children available for adoption are girls, although children of both sexes are looking for their forever homes.

I've always had love for handmade items. Scarves. Blankets. Sweaters. Hats. Toys. Furniture. What I find to be most special about handmade things is the story behind them. I hold the item in my hands and think about what the creator was doing or thinking as they made it. Were they knitting in a rocking chair as children played at their feet? A perfectionist sitting isolated at a sewing machine, careful not to stray from their path? Sanding wood in their garage, singing along to a tune on the radio? My imagination runs wild. The histories of the makers and their products is what I find most fascinating.

After giving birth to Nate, my love of handmade has grown exponentially. Unlike many plastic, mass-produced children's products, there is typically no BPA or endocrine-disrupting phthalates to worry about. You can just feel the tenderness and care put into something that is handcrafted. So, I choose to buy handmade whenever possible.

One mom-owned company I've come to know in this time is Little Journeys Baby World.

The founder, Caroline Riepler, got her start in 2001 handcrafting wooden European Good Luck Witches. She was quite successful - Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright even purchased one of her limited editions! But when her son, Stefan, was born in 2003, Caroline shifted her focus to products for babies and children. She started making things for friends and family, eventually expanding to local shops, special events and her very own online store. Unfortunately, her endeavor was cut short when she and her family were involved in a terrible car accident, hit by a drunk driver. Cute baby products that don't look like what everyone else is toting around, yes that's what I like to have! Little Journeys Baby World carries a variety of items that aren't what you're going to find at every other site on the internet. Caroline the owner does a great job creating and designing some fantastic items.

Caroline sent me a cute traveling changer pad with embroidery burp clothes for review. The changer pad is one item that I do not go without. I never used one with my son and once I got my hands on them for my daughter, I can't imagine life without them. Definitely a must have if you have a little one. This changer pad is cute and well made, 100% cotton, soft and easily cleaned. If you're looking to purchase a changer pad, these come in blue, pink, green and yellow. I don't use burp cloths on a regular basis but these are very cute, soft and will be used when we have our new baby. I like that they have cute embroidery on them and aren't like a lot of typical, plain burp clothes you see.

As we all know the Tooth Fairy (for the most part) is just as much a part of children's lives as the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus. After the first visit from the Tooth Fairy...your child is never the same. Once they notice a loose tooth, they can't get it out fast enough to get it under their pillow. I know you know what I'm talking about because you were probably the same way as a child! Some Ideas How to Fly with Baby and Toddlers

Being a world traveler is my greatest passion. I worried when I had my son, if I would be able to continue this passion of mine. With some creativity and some great books out there, and the internet, it wasn't a problem.

With my first trip to Austria, I am a large traveling changer pad that fits all restaurant and airplane changers, so that my son was germ free. It was so convenient! Also, I found out soon that I didn't have to have to bring my car seat with me, as there are lots of places that you can rent a car seat. I was fortunate to rent one in Austria. Below were the essentials I took on the plane:

- lots of diapers, baby wipes
- 2 pairs of extra clothing
- traveling kit for my son (Medicine (Children's Tylenol, Benadryl, Vapor Rub, Band Aids, Ear Drops, Thermometer, etc (see book recommendation for more info.)
- small stroller
- Washcloth
- Zip Lock Bags
- Food (bottles)
- Blanket
- small pillow
- stuffed animal
- baby books (anything that is entertaining)
- PJ's (only if you are doing an international flight) (yes, try to keep up your routine going. Sleep is important for you and your little one.)

I found that getting a seat on the plane where you have enough room was important. I needed to open up my diaper bag a lot during the flight, so I found that sitting next to the wall panel worked best for our family.

Don't hesitate to ask your flight attendants for help. I had some flights where they were just wonderful, and I was so grateful for that. Of course, that experience can be the other way around. But if you are open to everything, it will make you have an easy traveling experience.

While taking of or landing, it's essential to give your baby - toddler something to eat or drink. The sucking motion helps alleviate the pain or popping in the ears, that is often caused at these times. (Please ask your Doctor more about this issue)

Arrive at the Airport early as possible, because you need to be prepared for everything such as: potty breaks, going through security, food breaks, getting luggage checked in, etc.

Also, parents can always board first. Sometimes that isn't always the best idea.... Because toddlers need to get there energy out somewhere. So, you will have to decide what is best for you and your baby - child.

And don't forget to drink a lot! Keep hydrated is important for everyone involved.
